The premiere episode picks up six months after Captain Bobby Nash’s death in the last season, with the 118 firehouse honoring his legacy. After Athena returns home following her assignment with the feds, she is shocked to learn that her son Harry has dropped out of high school to work at a coffee shop. As a heated argument broke out between Athena, Harry, and Athena’s daughter May, the latter called out her mother for missing key moments in their lives. 

Both children accuse her of emotionally distancing herself since Bobby’s death and avoiding occasions such as family dinners. Harry’s blunt remark that she has not truly been their mother since their father passed away serves as a painful wake-up call, forcing Athena to acknowledge the consequences of her absence and reevaluate her role in her family.

Back at work, Athena confides in Hen that she has been struggling to engage with Bobby’s friends and family, and shares that all she wants is to simply talk to him. Hen reassures Athena that she is there for her, promising to keep inviting her to dinner despite previous refusals. In her turn, Athena pledges to accept the next invitation, prompting Hen to extend an extraordinary offer: a trip to space. 

This invitation originally comes from Hen rescuing a tech billionaire who was swallowed by a whale. The billionaire has promised $5 million to the fire department if Hen and a guest participate in one of his space trip launches. Athena’s willingness to reconnect, as seen by her acceptance of the out-of-the-world proposal, marks a step toward healing.
