Chris Brown, the Grammy‑winning R&B star behind “Go Crazy” and “Kiss Kiss,” is back in the headlines, this time standing in a London courtroom. He’s been hit with assault claims after an incident at Mayfair’s Tape nightclub. Brown has pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm and carrying an offensive weapon.

Authorities allege he struck music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle in February 2023. Security footage is said to have shown the whole thing, casting a fresh spotlight on his legal troubles. So what is he accused of, and how is he fighting back? Let’s break down the allegations, review official statements, and consider what this means for an artist no stranger to drama.

Allegations against Chris Brown: Assault charge in London nightclub and not‑guilty plea

Brown stands accused of a violent attack at Tape nightclub in February 2023. Prosecutors, backed by CCTV evidence, say that he struck Abraham Diaw multiple times over the head with a large tequila bottle, then punched and kicked him as Diaw collapsed to the floor in a packed Mayfair bar. The initial charge of grievous bodily harm with intent was upgraded in June to include two additional counts: assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon (the bottle).

On June 20, Brown pleaded not guilty to the GBH count at Southwark Crown Court in London, but deferred pleas on the newer counts until July 11, where he again entered not guilty pleas for assault and weapons charges. He also faces a potential 16‑year sentence if convicted.

The victim, identified as music producer Abraham (Abe) Diaw, has also launched a civil suit seeking £12 million (about US$16 million) in damages over head injuries and torn ligaments. According to court filings, Diaw says he was “brutally assaulted” and suffered severe and lasting physical harm, including head lacerations and ligament damage.

Brown was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel, detained on the 2023 warrant, and remanded into custody. After posting a steep £5 million bail bond, he was released in late May, conditions include surrendering his passport when not traveling and sticking to a UK address. He then resumed his “Breezy Bowl XX” world tour, kicking off a series of concerts across Europe and set to continue into North America.

Brown’s legal team has challenged the allegations, noting that two men were scheduled for police interviews in March 2023 but reportedly did not attend. At this stage, the Crown Prosecution Service emphasizes that Brown is entitled to a fair trial, and that commentary or speculation that could influence the proceedings is strictly discouraged.

As it stands, Brown rejects the accusation that he assaulted anyone. His not-guilty pleas signal a fight that could stretch into late 2026, with the trial tentatively set for October 26, 2026.

Past charges, reputation and what comes next

This isn’t Brown’s first brush with the law. Most notoriously, he pled guilty in 2009 to felony assault after a domestic violence incident involving Rihanna, resulting in probation, community service, and counseling. Since then, he’s faced several legal entanglements, from bar brawls with Drake in 2012, fights involving Frank Ocean, to battery allegations and alleged hit-and-run incidents. Though some charges were dropped, others led to probation revocations and lawsuits.

Despite the legal turbulence, Brown has remained a chart-dominating force. He just scored his second Grammy this year for 11:11 (Deluxe), and his tour remains on track, at least for now. That said, the looming trial and civil case could strain his public image and touring future. With verdicts expected no earlier than late 2026, this headline-grabber may shape the remainder of Brown’s 2025, and maybe perhaps beyond.
