Holmes Family Rescue returned with new episodes this summer, and along with it, Mike Holmes is offering homeowners practical advice that could help them avoid expensive mistakes. In a June 16, 2025, interview with Realtor.com, HGTV star Mike Holmes shared that asking one simple question—“why?”—can make a big difference during home renovations.
Mike, who stars in Holmes Family Rescue with his children Michael Jr. and Sherry, said homeowners should ask “why” throughout the renovation process. This helps them understand what materials are being used, how things are being built, and what the overall plan is. From glue to building rules, knowing the reason behind every choice helps people stay involved and avoid confusion or spending too much.
The show focuses on fixing renovation problems and poor construction work. It also shows how important it is to talk clearly and often with contractors. Mike’s advice comes as Season 2 airs on HGTV, with new episodes helping families deal with difficult home repair issues.
The Holmes family believes that staying informed and asking questions can help people avoid bigger problems and save money in the long run. Their goal on the show is to educate viewers while also delivering real solutions to real problems—without scripts or staged moments.
During his chat with Realtor.com, Mike Holmes emphasised that homeowners should never hesitate to ask “why” at any stage of their renovation. “Why?” he said, “will always dictate what you need.” He explained that asking about things like adhesives, building materials, or specific techniques can help homeowners gain a deeper understanding of the process.
Holmes advised people to be proactive:
“You can find out a million things in a million different ways, so you’re going to have to make your own evaluation as to which is the best [building product or procedure] to use.”
Mike also encouraged learning the basics so that conversations with contractors are more effective.
“Learn as much as you can to speak to the contractor so you have proper language [and] understanding [of] it coming back and forth,” he added.
This guidance mirrors what fans see on Holmes Family Rescue, where the team steps in to help homeowners who were left with incomplete or poorly executed renovations. Asking “why” early on, according to Holmes, gives homeowners more control and helps them avoid setbacks.
Holmes believes that with more information and communication, homeowners can protect themselves from common pitfalls and make smarter decisions about their home.
Mike Holmes isn’t the only one encouraging homeowners to stay informed. His children, Michael Jr. and Sherry Holmes, echoed similar thoughts in the interview. Michael Jr. said it’s important to be aware of current building technologies, even if you’re not an expert.
“There’s certain building technologies that you as a homeowner should know about when you’re going through this process so you can say, ‘This is what I want. This is the overall goal that I want. Help me get there.’”
Holmes Family Rescue star Sherry added that homeowners don’t need to know every detail, but trust and communication are key.
“You have to have that good relationship with your contractor in order to understand, because you’re not going to understand every single product and every single code that’s thrown at you,” she said.
The show’s second season continues to spotlight their teamwork as they take on new projects and work to fix previous construction errors. Mike described Holmes Family Rescue as “the most real television show you can watch on HGTV or any channel,” noting that everything is unscripted and happens in real-time.
Sherry shared that many of the homeowners they’ve helped were “wonderful and deserving,” and it made the work more rewarding. Michael Jr. added that "these stories are so real and relatable" and "people at home may have gone through what they are or know someone who has.”
As the Holmes family continues their mission, their message to viewers remains simple—ask questions, stay informed, and build with care.
