Jimmy Kimmel isn’t leaving his eponymous show. Media outlets have confirmed that the 58-year-old comedian and talk show host has signed a one-year extension to his contract with ABC, which was set to expire in May 2026. The news of Kimmel’s contract renewal comes after he was temporarily pulled as host of the Jimmy Kimmel Live following his comments about Charlie Kirk’s death.
Nexstar Media Group, owner of ABC Network, released a statement to the effect:
"Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets."
Kimmel stated during the controversial episode:
"We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it."
Kimmel resumed work almost a week later, amidst heavy criticism of the network’s actions to suspend him.
After Jimmy Kimmel was reinstated as host of the Jimmy Kimmel show, Donald Trump aired his criticism of the network’s actions on social media:
"Why does ABC Fake News keep Jimmy Kimmel, a man with NO TALENT and VERY POOR TELEVISION RATINGS, on the air?" Trump wrote on social media last month. "Why do the TV Syndicates put up with it? Also, totally biased coverage. Get the bum off the air!!!"
Kimmel responded to Trump’s comments, stating that he could no longer keep count of how many times the POTUS had tried to get him sacked:
"I've actually lost count of how many times the president has demanded I be pulled off the air," he said. "I mean, talk about a snowflake, this guy! Every five weeks, he flips out and wants me fired. If you got this many threats from a neighbor, you'd have no problem getting a restraining order."
He ended his statement by expressing that he admires the tenacity of Mr Trump, adding that he’ll go when the President goes.
