Rumors of the beloved CBS sitcom, The Jeffersons, getting a reboot have been making their rounds online. It all began when Facebook user @YODA BBY ABY shared a poster claiming a "modern reimagining" of the show was in the works, stating:
"THE JEFFERSONS ARE MOVING ON BACK!!!"
According to the post, the supposed series will star Anthony Anderson and Regina King as its protagonists, George Jefferson and Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, respectively. The poster claimed the story would center around themes of family and identity in a "changing New York City," adding:
"Anthony Anderson stars as George Jefferson, a charismatic dry-cleaning proprietor moves his family to a luxurious Upper East Side penthouse after hitting the Mega Millions, while Regina King portrays Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, his grounded wife balancing his bold personality."
It further claimed that the ten-episode season would air on Paramount+ starting this November.
However, the poster is fan-made, and no such show is in the works. The Facebook user @YODA BBY ABY is known for sharing similar fan art while incorrectly claiming it was in production. A bio under the user's profile read:
"I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news."
The Jeffersons was a sitcom that aired on CBS between 1975 and 1985. It centered around the lives of a wealthy African-American couple living in Manhattan, played by Isabel Sanford and Sherman Hemsley. Despite being a comedy, it occasionally addressed issues like substance abuse, racism, suicide, gun control, being transgender, and adult illiteracy.
The show was created by Norman Lear, known for producing hit sitcoms like All in the Family (1971–1979), Sanford and Son (1972–1977), and One Day at a Time (1975–1984). Notably, it was the second spin-off of All in the Family after Maude (1972–1978).
The show boasts 14 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning two. Notably, Sanford's win for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 1981 made her the first African-American actress to win in the category and the second to win an Emmy (after Gail Fisher). Per Screen Rant, it is one of the longest-running sitcoms.
Despite its success, the show was abruptly canceled after 11 seasons, without allowing it to end with a proper finale. According to Fandom, the cast was not informed until after the final episode. Notably, some even found out through tabloids.
In 1993, the original cast members, including Stanford, Hemsley, Roxie Roker, Franklin Cover, and Marla Gibbs, reunited for a stage show titled The Jeffersons Live: The Movin' On Up Tour. The production saw them recreate some of the famous episodes.
Some of the characters from the sitcom also made guest appearances on other shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Grand Hotel in the years since.
In a December 2016 interview with Variety, Lear revealed he was in talks with Sony Pictures Television to reboot several sitcoms, including The Jeffersons. He told the outlet:
"There is some talk about doing some of the original shows, redoing them with today’s stars."
However, the plans never materialized.
In May 2019, ABC broadcast a special Live in Front of a Studio Audience episode titled Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons. It starred Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes as George and Louise Jefferson, with Jovan Adepo playing their son Lionel.
