Rakim just gave Kendrick Lamar big props after he got a nod from him in The Clipse's new song, Chains & Whips. Rakim took some time last Saturday, July 12, to say thanks on Instagram. He was all praise for Lamar for the cool mention. "I salute you KING!!!" Rakim posted, touched by the shoutout.
He said it was the best shout-out he's got in years and it inspired Kendrick to keep pushing hard, showing all why he is still one of the best in hip-hop. In his words:
"Thnx for the illest shout I heard in a loooong time, and keep up the incredible work my brother, you ain't no joke !!!! Peace and blessings to you and yours."
Kendrick's words in Let God Sort Em Out, "Let's be clear, hip-hop died again / Half of my profits may go to Rakim," not only brings up the rap star but also shows the big love today's top wordsmiths still hold for the old-time leaders.
This talk is a sign that even as hip-hop grows, the link between old and new stays strong when singers show respect to the base that built their own lines.
When Rakim talked on Kendrick Lamar and Drake's rap fight last year, he saw it as more than just big news. He thought it brought back hip-hop's heart. In his conversation with Billboard, the rap star said it's not common for top artists to risk their names by going into a full fight.
He said it was nice to see Kendrick and Drake let go of charts and try their skills in an open fight. He also pointed out how their fight showed young ones that hip-hop is deep, that there's a big gap between smooth mainstream sounds and the rough, fun battle that made the scene at the start.
Many new rappers, Rakim said, didn't get this until this big face-off made it plain. For him, this rap battle wasn’t just fun; it was a needed lesson that real hip-hop lives when artists are bold to stand up only with their words, as long as it all stays in the songs.
