Fans of the long-running quiz show Jeopardy! tuned in on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to see another interesting episode. The episode had strong competition and a good Final Jeopardy clue that kept people guessing. The clue was about a famous quote attributed to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The category was Languages in History. The quote about the different languages he spoke in different situations gave the night a unique historical twist.

The last question on Jeopardy was "What is German?" In the clue, it said that Charles V spoke this language to his horse, to God, to women, and to men. The right answer was German, which showed how close the emperor was to the parts of his empire where people spoke German.

Merv Griffin made Jeopardy!, which is still one of the most popular American game shows. It first aired in 1964 and has been brought back several times over the years. Millions of people still watch the show every week, which is now hosted by Ken Jennings and combines knowledge, strategy, and quick thinking.

    Jeopardy Round

All three contestants got off to a good start in the first round of Jeopardy!. Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey, who is the defending champion, played as calmly and sharply as always. Adriene Holland, a risk control manager from Georgia, and Paul Ryan, a general manager of print marketing from Massachusetts, both brand new to the team, did well too. The categories included parts of the United States, famous people from American history, pop culture, and literature. Scott was ahead early on and consistently won the buzzer race while taking advantage of Daily Doubles.

    Double Jeopardy Round

As the game went into the Double Jeopardy round, it got tougher. By betting smartly on a Daily Double and correctly answering it, Scott kept his lead. Adriene tried to make a comeback by choosing the right category and winning all of the questions on the "World Capitals" set. Paul, on the other hand, had some trouble with timing and gave a few wrong answers. Even though the games were tough, Scott was way ahead going into Final Jeopardy.

Final Jeopardy Round (Languages in History)

The Final Jeopardy clue was rooted in historical linguistics. Under the category Languages in History, the clue was:
Holy Roman Emperor Charles V is said to have quipped,

Holy Roman Emperor Charles V is said to have quipped, “to God I speak Spanish, to women Italian, to men French, & to my horse” this

The correct response was “What is German?”

Scott answered correctly, further increasing his already substantial lead. Adriene also responded with the correct answer, boosting her final total. Paul, unfortunately, did not get the correct response and lost part of his wager. Ultimately, the round confirmed Scott’s dominance and strategic excellence.

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy segment stood out for its historical richness. The quote from Charles V challenged contestants to understand the context of 16th-century Europe. Scott’s wager was modest, protecting his lead. Adriene, trailing but hopeful, wagered just enough to boost her score with a correct response. Paul, needing a miracle, bet big but failed to respond correctly. It was a textbook lesson in strategy.
