The 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner, coming three days after Obama released his birth certificate under pressure from Trump and one day before Obama announced the killing of Osama bin Laden, is considered one of the most consequential editions of the once-annual dinner. "The folklore about this was that Trump was so humiliated by this evening that he decided to run for president," as The Washington Post's Paul Farhi notes. "Fwiw, Trump has denied that’s the case." During his speech, Obama not only roasted Trump, but imagined a blinged-out Trump White House. Meanwhile, Meyers, then SNL's "Weekend Update" anchor cracked a number of jokes at Trump's expense. "Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke," Meyers said. In 2017, Meyers blamed himself for Trump running for president. “I made fun of him in 2011. That’s the night he decided to run. I kicked the hornet’s nest,” he joked to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “It’s not the outcome I wanted, but that’s history. I got a man elected president. I want my points.”
