Gillian Flynn's long-gestating adaptation of David Kelly's 2013 black comedy British conspiracy thriller series has been canceled two months after its premiere. Utopia was originally developed for HBO in 2014 with Flynn reuniting with her Gone Girl collaborator David Fincher, who left the series after it moved to Amazon in 2018. Utopia was met with mixed reviews, scoring 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Utopia was led by John Cusack and also starred Dan Byrd, Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson and Jessica Rothe. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flynn said of remaking Utopia: "Dennis Kelly’s version is really sleek. It’s really poppy. It’s just its own particular world. I really wanted to do my own version of it. I kind of hooked onto the idea that the end of the world is coming, and that the answer is in something as silly and as easy to disregard as a comic book. I liked that basic concept. And I liked the concept of being able to write about where we are and feel it — feel that sense that I think we all do, that we’re kind of on the edge of choices that are really going to make a difference in the future. We’re kind of tottering there. I wanted it to feel very, very realistic."
