The 25-year-old big-screen star known for The Fault is in Our Stars and Baby Driver has never acted on a TV series before. He'll make his TV acting debut on Tokyo Vice, based on Jake Adelstein's 2009 memoir Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat, which provides a first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. Elgort will play the role of Jake, with Tony-winning playwright J.T. Rogers writing the series. According to Deadline, Tokyo Vice follows Jake's "daily descent into the neon soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing, and no one is truly what or who they seem. Elgort’s Jake Adelstein is an American journalist who embeds himself into the Tokyo Vice police squad to reveal corruption." Tokyo Vice is WarnerMedia's second series order, following Love Life from Anna Kendrick and Paul Feig.
