This week's decision to alter the scene followed months of "internal discussion at Netflix over the research regarding 13 Reasons Why and suicide rates, and the value of making a change in a show so long after it premiered," reports Joe Flint. He adds: "Netflix didn’t make the changes lightly, and people familiar with the company’s thinking stressed that this decision shouldn’t be seen as a sign of broader concerns about the editorial freedom the platform gives its creative partners. A person close to 13 Reasons Why said the episode likely wouldn’t have been changed if (creator Brian) Yorkey and the creative team hadn’t agreed with the decision."
