Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins and Rian Johnson have formed the UHD Alliance to promote a new UHD TV setting aimed at preserving the filmmakers' creative intent on consumer displays. The alliance was formed in response to the "soap opera effect," the default on most new TV sets that make movies hard to watch. "Your Skynet is motion smoothing. … Luckily our John Connor has arrived," said Johnson, adding on Twitter: "This is exactly what all of us who have been frustrated with motion smoothing and labyrinthine tv settings have been asking for. It is very, very exciting." The UHD Alliance comes eight months after Tom Cruise released an anti-motion smoothing PSA.
