It's absurd to lump all adult animated comedies together, says David Opie. Yet he adds that such "comparisons are occasionally warranted, particularly when it comes to the last decade's two biggest newcomers. At first glance, BoJack Horseman himself shares little in common with the titular elderly lead of Rick and Morty, but the pair are more similar than perhaps even they'd like to admit. One is a washed-up sitcom star from the '90s who literally eats and drinks like a horse. The other is a deadbeat grandfather who returns from the past to hang out with his grandson and drink himself to death. Sure, BoJack's a horse and Rick's a scientist, but both characters are also nihilistic neigh-sayers (ahem) whose self-destructive behaviour threatens to destroy everyone they love in the cruellest ways possible. Given that BoJack Horseman aired on Netflix while Rick and Morty continues on Adult Swim, a crossover episode was never possible, no matter how much Mr Peanutbutter might have hoped for one. The closest we'll ever come to that now is through fan art like this, but that doesn't mean Rick and Morty can't learn something from how BoJack Horseman ended."
