Whedon, who's attending March for Our Lives on Saturday, recalls Buffy the Vampire Slayer being pulled in wake of the Columbine shooting. If he was doing a school shooting story today, he says he'd emphasize respect for the gravity of the situation. “If you're in the head of a person who's trapped in a classroom, if you don't let genre tropes outweigh the physical and mental experience of the people you're filming, then you have a shot at saying something useful," he says. Adds DeGrassi co-creator Linda Schuyler, who has depicted school shootings, most famously with Drake: “We do not want to glorify things, and we don't want to sensationalize them."
