"True Detective was criticized in Season 1 for its lack of complex female characters, and in Season 2 we got a bit of an overcorrection in response," says Matthew Jackson. Ejogo's Amelia, in Season 3, doesn’t suffer from this problem, he says, adding: "Yes, it’s Wayne’s journey, but in leaving out Amelia’s final part in that journey, the show leaves something wasted on the table, and Amelia is too good of a character to deserve that."
