Earlier this week, Costello accused Teigen of bullying him via Instagram DMs in 2014, saying that the bullying led to having thoughts of suicide. A member of Teigen's team responded by alleging that the screenshots Costello posted were doctored. "Here are the purported DMs Michael posted. He says he took them in 2014 but IG messages have only looked like this (purple/blue ombré) starting in 2020," Business Insider reporter Kat Tenbarge tweeted. "However, if the screenshots were taken in 2020, Chrissy’s account would be verified. And her profile picture in these screenshots is from 2014 — not 2020. Also you couldn’t video chat on Instagram until 2018." Costello told her "no comment” when she pointed this out to him. Costello later released a statement to Access Hollywood, saying: “The fact that Chrissy Teigen’s team is desperately trying to prove the DM’s are fake and attempts to discredit Michael Costello, a victim of trauma and bullying by Chrissy Teigen both online and offline, confirms that she remains the same bully, despite her public apology.” UPDATE: John Legend tweeted that Costello "fabricated a DM exchange between them. This exchange was made up, completely fake, never happened...Honestly I don’t know why anyone would fake DMs to insert themselves in this narrative, but that’s what happened. I encourage everyone who breathlessly spread this lie to keep that same energy when they correct the record."
