Did Nickelodeon say SpongeBob is gay?

A tweet Nickelodeon posted early Saturday morning convinced many that the cable network had confirmed that SpongeBob SquarePants is gay. "Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month," said the tweet. But late SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg said in the early 2000s that SpongeBob is asexual and in 2005 that "we never intended" for SpongeBob and Patrick to be gay.
