Emily in Paris creator Darren Star only took one criticism of Season 1 seriously: French people who speak English to each other

Star said he didn't care about the haters when returning to the writers' room for Season 2. "That's like writing to a focus group — it's not how anything good ever gets done," he says. But he did change one thing: French characters speaking English to each other instead of French. The reason for the English-speaking was Emily in Paris was originally planned for Paramount Network, and they didn't want to burden viewers with reading too many subtitles. "This season, we spend a lot more time with our French characters, and when they're not with Emily, they're speaking French," says Star. "I love that American audiences are watching foreign shows with subtitles and it's not something that bothers them at all. In fact, they prefer the authenticity of seeing characters speak in their language when they logically would." Also, Star responded to a cheeky Netflix tweet saying that the "Emily" and "Paris" in Emily in Paris are supposed to rhyme -- as in "Emily in Paree." "For those who like to pronounce it that way, I'm all for it," he says. "But for me, it's 'Emily in Paris.'"
