The Television Academy announced that American Horror Story, American Vandal and The Sinner will have to compete in the traditional drama or comedy series categories after previously vying in the limited series categories. This will mark a major change for American Horror Story, which has competed in seven times in the limited series category. The TV Academy said the reclassifications were “due to continuing story threads, characters and actors reprising those same character roles from previous seasons.” American Horror Story: Apocalypse featured characters from previous seasons. The Sinner had an entirely different mystery in Season 2, but it brought back Bill Pullman's central character. American Vandal brought back two central characters for Season 2, despite having a new story. The reclassifications only apply to this year's Emmys, meaning they could go back to being limited series if they feature only brand-new characters in future seasons. The TV Academy defines a “limited series” as “a program with two (2) or more episodes with a total running time of at least 150 program minutes that tells a complete, non-recurring story, and does not have an on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.”
