The former fashion model and host of MTV's The Grind said in a New York Times article previewing Paramount+'s Real World revival that he never actually made it to the SoHo left used for Homecoming. Instead, he stayed in a New York City hotel room and communicated with other housemates via video monitor. Asked why, Nies said in a phone interview: “I’m not sure how much I can get into that right now.” He added added that the circumstances of his separation were “definitely not by my choice, but I accepted the outcome — more will be revealed in the future.”
