Jason Zinoman, author of the recent Letterman biography, went back and watched more than 30 Trump appearances with Letterman dating back to 1987. “Mr. Letterman and Mr. Trump had such an amiable rapport that they could disagree heatedly without rancor,” Zinoman notes, adding: “With Mr. Trump, Mr. Letterman felt comfortable going long stretches without jokes, probing his thoughts on the issue of the day and treating him with more respect than he did a sparring partner like Bill O’Reilly.” Zinoman also notes that Trump boycotted Letterman after being called a racist over Trump’s Obama birther lie, which prompted Dave’s apology. PLUS: Letterman will visit Howard Stern’s show Wednesday for the first time since 2004 — or 2014.
