Lucasfilm issued a statement Wednesday night saying: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” The former MMA fighter and actress known for playing bounty hunter Cara Dune on the Star Wars series has generated controversy -- and calls for her firing -- since last year with tweets and other social media posts that were called transphobic, mask-shaming and praising of the alt-right. Renewed calls to #FireGinaCarano trended on Twitter today after she shared posts Tuesday night comparing the treatment of conservatives in the U.S. to the Nazi treatment of Jewish people in the Holocaust. She also shared a meme this morning stating that “Jeff Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself” amid a jumble of letters. Carano and her supporters attempted to get the hashtag #weloveginacarano to trend, but to little effect. Carano later deleted some of the controversial posts. Last November, amid Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Carano generated more headlines with her tweets suggesting voter fraud and mocking mask-wearing. The Hollywood Reporter's Aaron Couch and Ryan Parker report that "Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series during a December investor's day presentation but scrapped those plans following her November tweets. Multiple Mandalorian spinoffs are in the works from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, including Rangers of the New Republic, which could have potentially starred Carano. But after the latest round of social media posts, the decision to cut ties with the actor came swiftly." UPDATE: Carano's agency UTA has also dropped her.
