The author and journalist's 2015 book won the National Book Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for its exploration of the fraught history of African-Americans in the United States and questions including what it means to live in a Black body. Kamilah Forbes is set to direct a stage show based on the book, with Coates and Susan Kelechi Watson executive producing. “Ta-Nehisi’s book is a modern literary classic that provides an essential message for our times,” says HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “We are tremendously proud to bring this incredibly important event to our audiences.” Coates adds: “I’ve been working with Kamilah for almost as long as I’ve been a writer. I can think of no one better to put ‘Between the World and Me’ on screen and no better home for it than HBO.”
