Herb Ellis dies at 97: Dragnet actor helped Jack Webb create the iconic cop show

Ellis and Webb wrote a pilot together titled Joe Friday, Room Five, which became the inspiration for Webb's 1950s Dragnet series. Ellis also played Officer Frank Smith, Webb's partner on the show for the first eight episodes.
