Kevin Can Wait had slightly better ratings than Man with a Plan, so why did CBS cancel Kevin and renew Man? Vox's Todd VanDerWerff explains that CBS had a financial incentive to keep airing the Matt LeBlanc comedy, because it's owned by CBS Television Studios, whereas Kevin Can Wait is owned by Sony TV Studios. The same goes for Last Man Standing -- which is owned by 20th Century Fox and is being revived by Fox -- and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is owned by NBC Universal, and was picked up by NBC the day after it was canceled by Fox.
