Critics made note of Rose's #MeToo docuseries being on a cable network that celebrates vapid celebrity culture. Yet McGowan sought to be on E! because she wanted to "reach the masses," and E! broadcasts in 160 countries, according to executive producer Andrea Metz. Metz added that McGowan felt distributors of high-end docuseries HBO and Netflix felt "not egalitarian." McGowan also trusted Bunim-Murray, which had adeptly handled AIDS activist Pedro Zamora's AIDS story on MTV's Real World in 1994. And Bunim-Murray already had a relationship with E! through its work on shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Total Divas.
