HBO programming president Casey Bloys suggested to Vulture that the delay was due to Issa Rae's movie career. “Well, Issa became a big movie star!” Bloys told Vulture. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things.” One Insecure fan tweeted of the delay: "I’m so so happy that Issa Rae is booked and busy but (crying emoji) I need my Insecure."
