Even though The Comey Rule is based on Comey's memoir and is told from Comey's perspective, "it also highlights the intense criticism and lingering contempt that the public (and, in the series, his own family) feels about the choices he made," says Anthony Breznican, adding: "The series is sympathetic to Comey, but characters repeatedly slam him for arrogance, misjudgment, and failing to recognize how his decisions would be viewed—or weaponized—by a society in conflict." The Comey Rules appeared to emphasize that love-hate relationship with Showtime releasing the song "F*ck You, James Comey" as a promo for the miniseries.
