Withers' big break came in 1934 at age 8 when she was cast opposite Shirley Temple in 1934’s Bright Eyes, becoming one of the most popular child stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood. After retiring from Hollywood at age 21, Withers again returned to mainstream popularity starting in the 1960s as Josephine the Plumber in Comet cleanser ads. The ads ran from 1963 to 1974, making her a household name.
