Lithgow won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama series for playing the revered but feared “Trinity Killer” Arthur Mitchell in Dexter's 2009 fourth season, which ended with his character getting killed off. So how will Arthur Mitchell return? Deadline's Dominic Patten reports that Lithgow will "make a short but decisive appearance" in the Showtime revival. "Details are scant, but scribes on the Clyde Phillips showrun 10-episode limited series have concocted a pathway for the Trinity Killer to come back that works within the larger Dexter narrative, I’m told," reports Patten. "To that end, Lithgow is expected to only film for about a day or so on the LA-set production. It is likely that his on-camera work will occur in the next week or so." In 2016, Rolling Stone ranked Arthur Mitchell as No. 34 in its list of the "40 Greatest TV Villains of All Time."
