John Oliver became a U.S. citizen during his Last Week Tonight hiatus

"On Friday Dec. 13, 2019, at the age of 42, John Oliver became a U.S. citizen. He can vote. He can serve on a jury. He can get arrested — without fear of being deported," reports The Hollywood Reporter. When Last Week Tonight returns on Feb. 16, Oliver will have a stake in the game. "If you're going to take swings, you'd better take ownership of the ground you're standing on," he says. "It's one thing being lectured to by a tourist; it's different being lectured to by someone who lives here. So that feels meaningfully different to me. It's your right to speak critically about the country that you have chosen."
