The Oscar-winning and Emmy-nominated Mandel was considered one of the finest arrangers of the second half of the 20th century, working with everybody from Michael Jackson to Frank Sinatra to Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee. Mandel scored more than 30 films, earning two Oscar nominations and winning one for 1995's The Sandpiper. In 1970, he created the score for the Robert Altman movie M*A*S*H from a lyric by Altman's 15-year-old son Michael. That tune, “Suicide Is Painless,” later became was used in instrumental form as the theme song for the long-running TV series M*A*S*H
