A Chicago jury convicted the former Empire star on five of six charges of staging an anti-gay and racist attack on himself nearly three years ago, in January 2019. He was acquitted on one count. According to the Associated Press, Smollett's "class 4 felony carries a prison sentence of up to three years, but experts have said Smollett would likely be placed on probation and ordered to perform community service." Smollett's lawyer says he will appeal the conviction and that his client is "100% innocent."
