In a press conference following Smollett's arrest early this morning, Chicago police superintendent Eddie T. Johnson also confirmed reports that Smollett allegedly wrote a threatening letter to himself. “I just wish that the families of gun violence in this city got this much attention,” Johnson said in detailing the felony charge against Smollett, including an allegation that he paid two brothers with a $3,500 check to beat him up. “Why would anyone — especially an African-American man — use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations?” he asked. “How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol and see an opportunity to manipulate that symbol to further his own public profile?”
