The Sunnyside co-creator and star indirectly responded to The Joker director Todd Phillips' recent comments that he left comedy due to "woke culture," saying "there has never been a better time to be funny!" In a series of tweets, Penn added: "I love making people laugh. Our show is a comedic love letter to America. About a weirdo (me) trying to rebuild his life while helping a group of immigrants navigate the USA. Our diverse, hilarious cast & writers are SO FUNNY. And they look like a cross-section of America. It's taken tv networks a long time to catch up & give audiences an opportunity to watch something like this, and I'm so proud and so thankful. Representation matters. Being funny matters. Getting to do all of that in one show is fun because bringing people together matters."
