Legendary University of Iowa football coach Hayden Fry, who inspired ABC's Coach, dies at age 90

Coach creator Barry Kemp named Craig T. Nelson's Coach character Hayden Fox in tribute to Fry, who coached the Iowa's football team from 1979 to 1998. Kemp is a University of Iowa alum and many of the exterior shots of the show's "Minnesota State" were actually of his alma mater.
