Michael Che reportedly says he's leaving SNL's "Weekend Update"

Che, who has shared the "Weekend Update" desk with fellow co-anchor Colin Jost since September 2014, was quoted by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as saying he's stepping down as co-anchor. "This is my last year," Che said between jokes during a pop-up show at a Minneapolis hair salon. "You know my tie is a clip-on, right? What man wears a clip-on tie to work for eight years — that's embarrassing." Che didn't go into detail about when or why he was leaving. In January, Che surpassed Seth Meyers with the second-most "Weekend Update" appearances, behind Jost. Che, who also serves as SNL co-head writer, has been branching out away from the show with his HBO Max That Damn Michael Che sketch show and his Netflix comedy special Michael Che: Shame the Devil, both released in 2021. Neither Che nor NBC has yet to officially confirm that he's leaving. UPDATE: On Instagram, Michael Che didn't confirm or deny he's leaving "Weekend Update": "to comedy fans; please stop telling reporters everything you hear at a comedy show. youre spoiling the trick," he captioned an Instagram post. Hinting he was joking, Che added: "im not leaving snl" and "i said it at a comedy show, and some dork transcribed it & wrote an article." Soon after posting, Che deleted his Instagram account.
