The New York Times obituaries editor William McDonald revealed that data to The Washington Post in an article about the rush to publish obits online in the internet era -- and publications stocking up on pre-written obits. (The Times currently has 1,850 obits ready to go when a famous person, such as the recently deceased Colin Powell, dies. The Hollywood Reporter has about 800 pre-written obits.) But pre-written obits don't apply to Williams, Macdonald and Garson, who've all surprisingly died in recent months. While Williams' obit drew 2.8 million views, Macdonald's obit surpassed 1 million and Sex in the City's Garson's obit approached 1 million, according to McDonald.
