The pickup of immigration comedy Sunnyside would give executive producer Michael Schur four shows on NBC's schedule, if Abby's is renewed for a second season. NBC already airs Schur comediesThe Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The pickup won't affect Penn's work on Netflix's Designated Survivor. Penn co-created the comedy with Matt Miller, in which he plays a former New York City councilperson who represents a diverse group of immigrants hoping to become American citizens. L.A. Law alum Smits will once again star in an NBC legal drama with Bluff City Law. He'll play the head of a law firm in Memphis that specializes in taking on injustice, who enlists his estranged daughter to rejoin the firm.
