This is the NFL's first change in the number of games per season since it went from 14 to 16 games in 1978. Players agreed to the additional game as part of their 2020 collective bargaining agreement, which reduces the number of preseason games from four to three, so that the number of total preseason and regular season games will still equal 20. The NFL season will continue kicking off in the week after Labor Day, but the 2021 season will end on Jan. 9 instead of Jan. 2. Thus the Super Bowl will be played on Feb. 13, 2022 instead of Feb. 6.
