The Oscar-winning actresses have signed on for the limited series adaptation of Laura Lippman’s book of the same name. Lady in the Lake marks the first lead TV role for Portman, who won an Oscar for Black Swan. It's also the first major small-screen role for Nyong’o, an Oscar winner for 12 Years a Slave. Honey Boy director Alma Har’el co-created the limited series with Colony and The Man In The High Castle writer Dre Ryan. Har’el will also serve as director. According to Deadline, "the limited series takes place in 60s Baltimore, where an unsolved murder pushes housewife and mother, Maddie Schwartz, played by Portman, to reinvent her life as an investigative journalist and sets her on a collision course with Cleo Sherwood, played by Nyong’o, a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, many jobs and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore’s Black progressive agenda."
