Greg Berlanti and The Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec are adapting a chapter in New York Times reporter Amy Chozick’s bestselling book Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling. While the book focuses on Chozick's experience covering Clinton's 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns, The Girls on the Bus is inspired by a chapter in the book of the same name about four female journalists who cover a fictional presidential candidate. The series, written by Plec and Chozick, isn't about Hillary Clinton or the 2016 presidential campaign. The chapter was inspired by the famous 1973 book The Boys On the Bus, about the male reporters who used to dominate the campaign trail. A previous series called Girls on the Bus was once in the works at ABC. Alexandra Pelosi, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's daughter, wrote the 2006 pilot about a female reporter and female news producer on the campaign trail.
