Kidman was exempted from Hong Kong's strict seven-day hotel quarantine when she arrived from Sydney, Australia on Aug. 12, despite Sydney going into lockdown following a surge in Delta variant cases. The South China Morning Post reports that Hong Kong’s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, “under mounting public pressure” to explain Kidman’s preferential treatment, confirmed that the Australian actress and other film crew had been granted an exemption “to carry out designated professional work.” Expats stars Kidman and Jack Huston in an adaptation of Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel The Expatriates about an expatriate community in Hong Kong whose lives are bound together forever after a sudden family tragedy.
