The Late Shift author Bill Carter, who spent more than two decades covering television for The New York Times, says the anti-Trump jokes in late-night are unprecedented for a politician. “There’s a horde of writers writing jokes about Donald Trump every single night,” Carter tells his old newspaper, adding that late night TV is in “absolutely uncharted” territory. “(Stephen) Colbert and Seth Meyers, they are like the voice of the resistance,” says Carter. Late-night comedy, he points out, has always played off the news. And since all the news is about President Trump, it’s hard for late-night comics to ignore him.
