As a whole, Matt Groening's new medieval animated Netflix series is disappointing, says Sonia Saraiya. "What Disenchantment does have going for it," she adds, "is unlikely protagonist Bean, a female take on Fry from Futurama—a couch potato everywoman, a slacker, an idle audience surrogate. Saraiya says Abbi Jacobson's character is "oddly refreshing: here is a female character who doesn’t have to be witty, pretty, or brave. She just exists, poorly, and gets a whole show for her troubles."
