NBC, ABC and CBS will each devote one hour each night to the four nights of the Democratic and Republican conventions over the next two weeks. But from 1952, when the first convention was televised, to 1976, when there was a close battle between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan to become the Republican nominee, political conventions were must-see television.
