Petty, who died Monday night at age 66, was good friends with Garry Shandling (Petty played himself on It’s Garry Shandling Show and Larry Sanders). Petty also had a role on King of the Hill, playing Luanne’s husband Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt in 28 episodes of the Fox cartoon. As TV Line notes, Petty’s “American Girl" was a staple of TV montages, from Scrubs to The Handmaid’s Tale. Nearly every episode of Cougar Town was named after a Petty song. “I only have real genuine love for a few artists,” Cougar Town co-creator Kevin Biegel wrote upon hearing that Petty was hospitalized. “Tom Petty is one of them. I'm sure many feel this way. A very very sad day just got sadder.”
