On the December 19, 1973 edition of The Tonight Show, Carson sent America into a mass panic with a joke that started with: "You can laugh now, but there is an acute shortage of toilet paper." As The a timely mini-documentary from The Atlantic notes, there was actually no toilet paper shortage.
