The former Today anchor was grilled in the days before a formal complaint was filed against him. Lauer responded that he was “racking his brain and couldn’t think of anything at all” when confronted by NBC News chairman Andy Lack and NBC News president Noah Oppenheim in the two weeks before he was fired, reports Paul Farhi. Both executives weren’t contacted by Variety or The New York Times, which were investigating Lauer. But both publications did reach out to lower-level staffers, who tipped off their bosses, prompting their questioning of Lauer. As Farhi, reports, “in addition to asking Lauer about the rumored allegations, the network searched its human-resources and legal archives to see if there were any complaints or settlements involving Lauer...They found none..."
