Sean Penn is still fighting with Netflix as it releases an El Chapo docuseries

Penn’s lawyer sent Netflix a letter last week saying it is “hereby on notice that blood will be on their hands if this film causes bodily harm” over The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story, a three-part documentary series that was set to hit Netflix early Friday morning. Penn did not participate in the documentary, and his attorney says the actor fears that he is being put in danger over its release. According to The New York Times, “Penn is apparently upset because he believes the documentary implies that he helped the authorities at the Department of Justice in their capture of El Chapo.” Deadline adds that “Penn’s sole aim was to see his part in the infamous October 2015 meeting with drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera depicted accurately.” “This is nothing but a cheap, National Enquirer-esque tale spun be a delusional person whose hunger for fame is both tawdry and transparent,” Penn’s representative told Deadline on Thursday. Netflix, for its part, says Penn “was given the opportunity on multiple occasions to participate” and that the “the only new ground we’re breaking with this series is to give Kate a chance to finally tell her side of this stranger-than-fiction story.”
